Fun around Charlottesville

Food & Drink

Mono Loco Restaurant
Delicious "nouveau-Latin" food (sounds fancier than it is), delicious tacos, good margaritas and fresh limeade and hibiscus tea, sit indoors or on the expansive patio, right off the pedestrian mall in C'ville. GO HERE if you get a chance!

Michael's Bistro
This is a romantic little second-floor place right off the UVA campus. They have great beer and delicious food. We had a Valentine's dinner there a few years ago.

Shenandoah Joe
We're not coffee nerds, but if we were, this would be the place to cup...isn't that what you call coffee tasting?

C'ville Coffee
We met our celebrant for the first time at this coffee shop. They have sandwiches and salads, baked goods and a special kids play area if yours need some run-around space on a rainy or hot day.

South Street Brewery
They make their own beer. It's good.

Miller's
This old (1920s!) pharmacy has live music every night of the week and the original wood bar. Oh, and Dave Matthews used to bartend here.

Wine-tasting

Monticello Wine Trail
There's a plethora of wineries in the Charlottesville areas. If you want to stick to the west side of C'ville, there are many within miles of Montfair. The closest are: Glass HouseStinsonMountfairKing FamilyWhite Hall

Nature/Outdoors

  • Moorman's River Hike aka Sugar Hollow (THIS IS CLOSE TO MONTFAIR!)
    • Getting there from C'ville:
      • Take Barracks Rd./Garth Rd. out of town northwest for half an hour to Whitehall, where the road takes a 90-degree right turn just before a country store.
      • Instead of following the road, go straight on to Sugar Hollow Rd. and go to the end.
    • From Montfair: At the Montfair sign, turn left on Slam Gate.
      • Right on Brown''s Turnpike (County Rd 810) at the bottom of the hill.
      • Right on Break Heart Road (County Rd 674)
      • Right on Sugar Hollow Road (the road Ts here after 2. 3 miles). Stay on this road past Sugar Hollow Inn and veer right to stay on road.
    • Pass the Reservoir Dam and park in the first parking area. There is another one further up the road, but this road has the biggest potholes we've ever seen. Not worth it in your rental car.
    • Follow the river away from the reservoir for a level hike or cross the river at the parking area and go straight up to Skyline Drive. (We did the second, but didn't go all the way to Skyline Drive). Great swimming holes either way in summer. A good place to bring the kids, and beautiful scenery along the way. No entrance fee.
